Sneha Subramanian Kanta

Nighttime Prayer

Mimetic gods show their prophecies
in shadows of strangers walking streets,

each, like layers of an onion, like my
literature professor explained in her first

lecture to us; to be carefully uncurled,
while reciting Ode to the West Wind.

I examine every shadow on the street,
and memorize psalms of imagination —

their lives, troubles and vague worries,
their triumphs, stories and successes,

before the driftwood of sleep,
in this relinquished entreaty,

and meditate upon a dream less
prolific than Freud’s analysis.
