Joseph Salvatore Aversano

Four Poems

how to sign the word "listen"

to draw in on one hand
to one ear

        two grasping fingers
and a thumb

     §

step by
step the mile

post meaning
less if

behind
is ahead the

fog if all
the power lines go

    their way

     §

coming down off
the steppe

the poplars now
cypresses

the grass now
sea

     §

once grew some

with light, rain
and waiting

just to have them
grow hard like

knuckles in
the earth.

Joseph Salvatore Aversano's most recent poems have been published in Bones, Modern Haiku, otata, and Otoliths. He currently lives with his wife Asu in the Aegean port city of Izmir (Smyrna), one of the few places claimed to be the homeland of Homer.
