Slice of Life


A woman in a black dress eats a
tarte flambée in a French bistro on
a rainy afternoon in New York City.
Across from her table my friend and I

share salmon en croute, a potato omelet,
views on how nuclear proliferation,
overpopulation and global warming are
killing the planet as the crawl on the

video screen by the bar cycles stories about
Mid East bombings, demonstrations in
Europe, African ebola, and racial strife in
the USA. My friend says his sister has been

diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. I
tell him my wife wants out of the Big Apple,
a place I love as much as the woman in black
loves the kugelhopf she orders to go that

she offers to share with us but we’re
full and offer to buy her a drink she
declines because she has to leave to
tend to a sick child at home.




Martin H. Levinson is a member of the Authors Guild, National Book Critics Circle, and the book review editor for ETC: A Review of General Semantics. He has published nine books and numerous articles and poems in various publications. He holds a PhD from NYU and lives in Forest Hills, New York.
