Christopher Barnes

Folk Tales

Elvis Presley hinges a pas de deux
To the leitmotif sign-boarded ‘Swan’s Theme’.
He’s Imperial Ballet’s whiz-banger.
As Odette, the blue-blood transanimated,
He profiles a soft underbelly. Flames last-gasp
Drenched, in obligato without end, Hades-sunk

Uptown Shakedown

Jimi Hendrix eavesdrops the flabbergasted,
Nibbling chocolate-plunged melon
At The Waldorf.
All hands itch to be pocket-lined.
Clinking gold is tinsel.
Wall Street Crashes.
In lightning jumps grandeur putrefies.
Balance sheets flip a three card trick.
There goes his Cadillac 8
And whip-hand guitar.

Christopher Barnes’ first collection LOVEBITES was published by Chanticleer Press. He reads for Proudwords lesbian and gay writing festival each year, partakes in workshops, and co-edits the poetry magazine Interpoetry.
