The World Is a Future Egg

I

The boy named Gork squeezed the world three times in his hand and invented seven new synonyms for the word, putty. His mother, addicted to dirty laundry and getting to the bottom of things, spread her delusions that Gork was radioactive. Her husband, a mild-mannered [often speechless] man with smoke-colored eyes, looked for evidence. In this way, they could give him up to science and be childless again. He pointed to the fact that Gork could read aloud messages from the glass of aquariums or car dealerships, the blank faces of walls, or repeatedly mispronounced the same words just to see how far his teacher could stretch her vocal cords or become paralyzed in the half-open position. "No," said the mother thinking of a different version of goose stew if cattle became scarce from herd madness. "I mean he's rubbing off on us. Look! Look at my hands. Gork grew into his glass menageries. There were lean years where strangers felt like moths. A woman with flat features told her that beyond the rift, people have become invisible. Then, she asked what kind of car did her father drive. When Lulu said a wine-colored Honda Accord with air-powered sole massage, the clerk said she didn't believe it. Back home, Lulu sat by the window and hoped the rain would fill the rift so no one would have to text to find their true reflection. She hoped Gork would not drown or become a skeleton of his parents. Days later, she invented a version of Solitaire for multiple players without hands.
