EMILY AS A SCATTER, A WISH FOR DISPERSION

I am not resigned to think that though I am in love
with my wife, that is enough to stay married to her
& though she is in love with me, that is not enough

for us to bask in the seasons of Ohio, to name them
after our favorite activities, to make them ours, nest
them as ours, let our asses get comfortable in them

like we have earned any of this. Emily is an unfulfilled
idea. She is a woman left to elegy, in need of being saved
from the sorrowful perambulations of time. She is a body

to bless with the efforts of a man in a field, undeterred
by the lack of sun, the lack of crop, the lack of direction
home. With my rising blood I will effort us for a long time.

Darren C.
