Mathew Abbott

attenborough

when not yourself you
glitch around the house

                a rattle copied
                in discretely
                hepped up signals

your throat clears
for a darkened syllable
in the 'surprising intelligence'
of the lowland silverback

                as in the body
                an absence of music

         holds out for what
         could sweeten

the wonky natural 2
-step of the animal
human heart

Mathew Abbott lives in Queanbeyan with his wife Emilie and his dog Champion Ruby. He is bassist and vocalist with Life and Limb, and blogs at http://beetleinabox.tumblr.com. His first collection - wild inaudible - was published in April by Australian Poetry.
